Microsoft, which recently started rolling out the Windows 10 Anniversary update to over 350 million computers, seems to be ready with future updates. With Windows 10, Microsoft has announced plans to roll out frequent updates to the OS rather than announcing a new OS once every three years.
Now that Windows 10 is already receiving its first major update, Microsoft has started speaking about the future updates. A new blog detailing Windows 10 update change log for IT professionals reveals Microsoft’s future plans. In the blog post, Microsoft’s Nathan Mercer says, “This will be our last feature update for 2016, with two additional feature updates expected in 2017.”
The next big update for Windows 10 is codenamed Redstone 2 and Microsoft is already working on it with internal builds out for testing, reports The Verge. Microsoft is not revealing exactly what it has in store for future updates but it is likely to launch alongside the next generation Surface Book and Surface Pro hardware updates. The Verge says the Redstone 2 update will be released sometime early next year.
The Windows 10 Anniversary Update released this week was codenamed Redstone 1, which means Redstone 2 could well be a significant update. Microsoft Windows 10 was released last year with Windows 7 like UI and Windows 8’s fast boot system.
Microsoft also runs an Insider Programme where it allows beta testers to test the future updates ahead of launch and reports bugs and UI changes. The Redstrone 2 updates could hit the fast ring soon before reaching the end users. Microsoft also announced that it might take longer than 3 years for the organisation to take Windows 10 to over 1 billion devices. Windows 10 is being used by over 350 million machines, which includes PCs, notebooks, mobiles, Xbox and Hololens.
