‘Fiscal consolidation is government’s prime concern’

August 4, 2016

Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake said that there would be no unnecessary public expenditure to further grow the pile of national debt.

Addressing the Sri Lanka Economic Summit 2016 at the Cinnamon Grand, Colombo on Tuesday, the minister said: “Fiscal consolidation is the government’s prime concern. We recognize it as a must. We have had some success in expenditure controls. For example, we have been able to reduce the cost of proposed expressways by 22% than earlier. With unbiased doing-business policies we have created the right environment for the private sector to come forward and invest. But we don’t see enough investment coming in. If this persists, we will have to facilitate FDIs in many sectors”.
