Earthquake of magnitude 6.1 strikes

September 4, 2016

A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck the southern Philippine island of Mindanao on Sunday, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said. The quake struck at a shallow depth of 10 km (6 miles), 12 km northwest of the town of Hinatuan, the USGS said. There are no reports of casualties yet or any tsunami warnings.
More details are awaited.
The country is in a “state of lawlessness”, as announced by its President Rodrigo Duterte, after an explosion at a market in his home city killed at least 10 people on Friday and wounded dozens more. An Abu Sayyaf spokesman, Abu Rami, claimed responsibility for the blast near the Jesuit-run Ateneo de Davao University and a five-star hotel, but Duterte said investigators are looking at other possible suspects, including drug syndicates, which he has targeted in a bloody crackdown.
