Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID) of police Monday arrested the former President Parliamentarian Mahinda Rajapaksa’s eldest son and Hambantota District United People’s Freedom Alliance Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa on suspicion of financial fraud. He was remanded by the Fort Additional Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne until August 22.
MP Namal Rajapaksa was summoned before the FCID of the Police this morning to record a statement on money he had invested in two companies, according to his counsel. The FCID arrested the MP at the conclusion of his statement.
He is being investigated on allegations of financial fraud, relating to shares worth Rs. 125 million, purchased from Hellocorp.
It was the second time the FCID has arrested the MP over alleged financial irregularities.
Rajapaksa was arrested on 11 July by the FCID in connection with a $650-million real estate project in Colombo involving India’s Krrish Group. He was accused of fraudulently obtaining Rs. 70 million from the Indian firm. He was released on bail on 18 July.
