Central armoury to be set up in Oyamaduwa

August 4, 2016

The government said that a building complex to international standards to store the military’s ammunition and explosives which was currently kept in various places in the country would be constructed in Anuradhapura.

Co-Cabinet Spokesman Gayantha Karunathillake told a news conference in Colombo that the new complex named the Central Ammunition and Commercial Explosive Armoury would be established at Oyamaduwa in the Anuradhapura District , which was an area with a small population, on a proposal by President Matithripala Sirisena in his capacity as Defence Minister.

The decision to build a Central Armoury in an area with a low density, he said had been taken by the Cabinet in 2011, but was not implemented.

Karunathillake said that while the war was on, the military had stored ammunition and explosives at camps situated in various parts of the country.
